A Sticky Situation [Jan. 25th, 2010|02:10 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Mood | chipper]

Name: 'Stuck Together' (original concept by Mands)

Type: Group Plot

Format: NPC post (by Kate) followed by individual scenes (no giant thread)*

Timeline OOC: Scenes written and posted between 2/1 - 2/14

Timeline IC: Approximately a week

Synopsis: NPC Dana Harper is in love, but the object of her affection has spurned all of her advances thus far. In a last-ditch attempt to bring them closer, she pays a mage for a spell that is meant to chain their hearts together by Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, either the ingredients are wrong or the mage overestimated his talents. The spell goes awry. Strange, silver tendrils shoot out from her altar, snaking through the air in Key West. When they happen upon two people standing in close proximity, the tendrils turn into actual chains and 'lock' the people together at the wrist. The chains have no magical effect on their emotions, but they do cause a problem... While seeming delicate, the chains won't break and allow only a few feet of space between them. The chains finally fall apart on Valentine's Day.

Resolution: See above.

Ways to Get Involved: Simply comment on the OOC post to let Kate know you're interested! You can submit a character and have the mods pick your partner, or organize something on your own with other cast members. Consider choosing a character that yours doesn't usually hang out with! :)

Moderator Resolutions for 2010 [Jan. 3rd, 2010|02:52 am]
If a writer:

1) Asks a mod if it's their turn in a group thread, or Jane Doe's, the moderator will encourage the writer to figure it out with Jane Doe, rather than being a middleman.

2) Complains that Jane Doe isn't tagging them fast enough, the mod won't intervene until the writer has spoken to Jane Doe themselves, rather than getting in the middle of it, and will only arbitrate if it didn't work.

3) Asks a mod what Jane Doe's screen name or email address is, the moderator will say 'check the cast list'.

4) Asks a mod to let them know when it's their go in a group thread, the mod will say 'refresh the page periodically or track the thread yourself', rather than setting up an unfair expectation that we'll stare at the page all night while the writer goes about their business.

5) Asks a mod how to work InsaneJournal, the mod will encourage them to check the IJ FAQs.

6) Asks a mod where to send a new application, the mod will say 'same email for the last 5 years' and then eagerly await the application's arrival.

7) Complains about something lacking from Low Tide, like not enough villains, the mod will say 'have you considered writing one?' and encourage them to be a problem-solver.

8) Sends in an application that needs some tweaking, the mods won't apologize all over themselves for offering constructive feedback, since that's what mods are for.

9) Says there's not enough bonding in Low Tide, the mod will invite them to brainstorm and help organize a group plot, since anyone is welcome to do so.

10) Asks a mod what the username and password for the NPC account is, the mod will say 'we always do the same thing... identical username and password'.

11) Asks a mod when Jane Doe's going to be online, the mod will suggest an email or OOC message to Jane Doe, because we don't have psychic powers.

12) Says that Jane Doe screwed up the cut-tag, italics, bold, etc. in a post, the mod will suggest that the writer message Jane Doe themselves, rather than be a middleman.

**********

We love Low Tide and all its writers. We are grateful every day for your participation, friendship, and passion for creating a storyline we love. Without you, we wouldn't have a game, and we agree that it's our job to set the tone of the game, maintain the websites, brainstorm plot arcs, advertise and review applications, settle major disputes, participate fully, listen to concerns, encourage, and help out when people need an ear. However, we've all been writing together for ages, now, and some of the questions we get are kinda... well...

DUH!

It may be easier to 'Ask a Mod', but we're busy people, too. Help us out a bit. :)

Key West's Online Calendar of Craaaaziness! [Dec. 5th, 2009|11:12 pm]
Oh so helpful!
http://www.keywest.com/calendar/kwpevents.cfm

The brilliant thing about writing in current tense is that we can have our muses act out ACTUAL events... just with whatever AU twists we find necessary. ;)

Sample from the calendar:
Key West New Year's Eve Celebrations- The Southernmost City celebrates with a conch shell drop at Sloppy Joe's Bar, 201 Duval St.; a descending 6-foot red high heel shoe carrying drag queen Sushi at the Bourbon Street Pub/New Orleans House complex, 724 Duval St.; and a pirate wench descending from a tall ship mast in the island city's Historic Seaport.

This location is so inspiring and frankly wacky. Let's make use of it!

Important Notes from Mods [Nov. 13th, 2009|01:56 pm]
Hello, all! Low Tide opens tonight at 12:01am, Florida time (Eastern Standard Time). Please don't post early... it's Friday the 13th! ;) Because of a massive storm system making Virginia its bitch, Kate has intermittent internet, but the game goes on!

Have you:

*Updated the user profiles of any Birthright/City Limits characters you're writing from scratch and had E or Kate look them over?

*Updated the user profiles of any BR/CL characters you're transferring in (basically just putting a few details down at the bottom if there's info we need to know about the life they're taking over)?

*Logged into InsaneJournal for each character and clicked this link to accept asylum invitations?
http://www.insanejournal.com/manage/invites.bml

*Applied any totally new characters using the formal application on the resource page?
http://birthrightrpg.wetpaint.com

*Logged into the resource page to make sure the cast list has all your correct info?
http://birthrightrpg.wetpaint.com

*Read over the OOC posts from the past few days?

We're excited!

Some characters are transferring from an alternative reality, set in the year of 2014! Just in case yours is, please read the following information so you'll know how to write your first posts!

As you've read in the FAQs, a hidden relic is buried under the sand of Fort Zachary Taylor beach. It's been swept up there by a recent offshore storm, but remains buried, meaning that characters are unable to see it. The relic has a magnetic influence on supernatural characters, drawing them into the area without them realising it.

While you can't see it, you can walk over it. This is only possible at low tide - hence, our new title!

Some characters will feel a subconscious desire to walk out there at low tide. They won't know why, only that it feels like the 'right' thing to do.

Once within very close range to it, they'll be suddenly - and without warning - given the memories/personality of their alternative, future selves (from City Limits or Birthright). The immediate result of this is severe disorientation and wandering away in a daze. From that point, the City Limits or Birthright personality will have taken over. The characters will remember the lives their lives from the Low Tide reality, as if through a dream-like haze. They'll recall enough to know where they live, how to access money, when and where they are employed and so on. They'll even remember telephone numbers and some friends (basically, enough to let them 'survive' in the immediate aftermath).

Conversely, their memories from CL or BR will feel like the 'real' ones, much more vivid and clear. There will not be any possibility of multiple personalities setting in!

Please note that in Low Tide, the date will be November 14, 2009. The last thing they'll remember, though, is being in Chicago on July 10, 2014, just as the 'white-out' occurred, which allowed characters to make a wish from the heart and then live on with their existences, accordingly.

Characters who transfer will be aware that their old 'life' continues in their originating world without them: This is to prevent them from morbidly dwelling on attempts to go home. Essentially, they will have closure; a sense of certainty that they are needed in this world, not the old one (and that they could not travel there, regardless). Quite how they realise this, whether in the form of a direct vision, instinct, a dream or some other way, is up to the individual writer.

What matters from that point on, is that it's five years earlier and they're somehow in Key West, Florida, with a past which differs in either small or major ways from the one they would otherwise be familiar with.

NOTE: This may be a transfer of consciousness, but remember that they're 'copies'. The actual, original personalities will continue to go on with their own existence, in their respective realities, completely unaware of this happening. It's basically the same as photocopying a document.

Things You Should Do! [Nov. 5th, 2009|09:49 pm]
1) Read over the cast list. See who's old and who's new! See who's transferring memories and who's beginning from scratch. If any field of information is blank for you or your characters, log in and fill it in, or tell Kate.

2) Make sure your own characters' user profiles contain updated biographies, if you've changed them for AU. Make it easy on the rest of us to learn about your muses.

3) Read the game premise and FAQs. Ask the mods for clarifications on anything oddball. If you don't read it, you're goinig to be L-O-S-T when we begin, trust us on this!

4) Never been to Key West? Check out the page of helpful links and read up on it! It's a quirky place. Don't try to fly by the seat of your pants. For instance, you might want to narrate your character surfing, but have you looked at those waves? Tiny! Ain't gonna happen! You might want to narrate your vampire rising up from the dirt, but did you know that in Key West, everyone's put to rest above ground? You may want to narrate your character strolling through a forest, but did you know there really aren't any? You may want your character putting on gloves and a sweater, but did you know it rarely even frosts there? Note that Google has mapped out the street level view very well, so you can take virtual walking tours.

5) Check out the PB list. Are any of yours missing? Log in and add them or tell Kate.

6) Are your characters working in fictional bars, etc.? Add them to the list of frequented places!.

7) Have you been granted access to the in- and out-of-character communities? Log in and check your asylum invitations. If you haven't, poke Kate!
